Toast-land
Sarkara

I translate the familiar French bread slice into sugar: fragile, luminous, and
ever-changing. By shifting a daily symbol of nourishment into an ephemeral material, the work reveals a delicate tension between comfort, memory, and transformation.

The Sanskrit word śarkarā originally meant “gravel” or “grain,” and later referred to sugar crystals. It travelled through Persian (shakar) and Arabic (sukkar) before becoming sucre in French.
